Each student affiliated with a medium is included in an organizational membership. Individual memberships are open to college media advisers, faculty members, and individuals affiliated with online media. Advisers are not covered by a student medium’s organizational membership. Annual memberships begin on the date that dues are recorded as received by CICM.

Why Join CICM?

We teach ‘hands on.’

We don’t believe in lectures, because the time for talk is over. We teach hands on. Your hands will be on keyboards, cameras, video cameras and digital audio recorders. You will learn real skills and produce real content in our workshops and conferences. You will be taught by leading industry experts.

You come to our training sessions with ambition and imagination. You leave our workshops with new ways to tell stories, new skills you can show others and the ability not just to imagine, but also to do. You will leave as a multimedia journalist.

CICM member students and advisers receive discounted registration to our training events. Evaluations from our most recent sold-out workshop indicated that 95 percent of attendees learned new skills and 97 percent said they would attend a CICM workshop again.

We reward excellence.

At the CICM, online media is not a sideshow to be ignored, it’s the main event. All CICM member organizations are eligible to compete for national recognition in the most comprehensive journalism awards contest in the world of college media. Categories recognizing overall excellence and individual performance in areas such as site design, usability, use of video, use of audio, slideshows, interactivity, innovation and other areas will allow member schools to earn industry acclaim. CICM contests are judged by practicing journalists who are considered to be among the
nation’s elite in new media. The inaugural CICM online awards will be presented in March 2008.

We offer feedback.

The CICM is the only national association that offers written critiques for college media Web sites. We use leading experts from professional media to provide thorough feedback and offer improvement suggestions for your site. These judges also rate your site based upon standard criteria and award special recognition for outstanding work. CICM members receive a deeply discounted fee for site critiques.

We help students get jobs.

The CICM is building a secure, Web-based resume/portfolio bank that will be available for its student members. Access to this searchable database will be shared with recruiters representing both small and large media companies seeking prospective employees with new media/ multimedia skills. CICM student members will have an option to post an employment file.

We help advisers do their jobs better.

Adviser, faculty and affiliate CICM members are eligible to post profiles on a secure, member-accessible interface. This will allow members to locate peers who possess special expertise, or who work in common campus situations, or who have developed solutions to common problems, and generally facilitate the sharing of information and encourage networking.

We keep you current.

Thousands from within the college media community and among the circle of national new media experts regularly read the CICM blog “Innovation in College Media.” The blog has been spotlighted and linked to by leading media sites. The blog regularly offers the most current news, trends, tools and strategies for new media, and features audio/video interviews with professional media pioneers and luminaries.

CICM has set up a “Speaker’s Bureau” of folks who are willing to travel and help you where needed.
